Packers’ scenarios: Best, worst & likely

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The safest NFL Draft prediction is that the Packers will be deeper and more talented by next week. Green Bay has ammunition to manipulate NFL Draft depending on who’s available.
The question is how much deeper and more talented?
Will it be enough to help Packers coach Mike McCarthy stay ahead of Chicago and leapfrog Minnesota and Detroit? Will it be enough to resuscitate a dormant defense? Will it be enough to replenish a once-prolific offense?
The first step to making that happen is the Packers’ draft board. If the personnel and coaching staffs have done their job, the Packers will be able to select an impact player with the 14th pick.
In today’s Internet-driven world, the plethora of mock drafts generally agree on the top 15-to-20 players available when the NFL Draft kicks off its first round Thursday at 7 p.m.
The trick is to select the best player when you’re on the clock.

Packers’ pass rush will get help at 14

GREEN BAY, Wis. – North Carolina State’s Bradley Chubb is the top pass rusher in the April 26-28 NFL Draft.
Green Bay should have at least one of four top “front seven” defenders to pick from
Chubb will be long gone by the 14th pick.
Fortunately, the Packers are in a decent position with the 14th overall pick to draft a premier “front seven” defender. Most mock drafts have the usual fare of overrated quarterbacks, one great running back (Saquon Barkley of Penn State), a few offensive tackles and a couple of defensive backs going early.
That means the Packers should be able to stay put at No. 14 and still land one of the draft’s top defensive players. They may even end up getting one of the premier pass rushers.
Here’s hoping that one of these four players will be on the board when Green Bay turns in its draft card to the commissioner:
Would the running back position truly be settled without Aaron Jones?
Each of the aforementioned players was drafted with a compensatory pick – the NFL’s mysterious and largely unexplained formula for paying back teams who incur a net loss in free agency – which has been one of the Packers’ best tools.
The NFL awarded its compensatory picks for 2018 (free-agent losses/gains in the 2017 offseason) last week. The Packers got the No. 133rd overall (fourth round), the Nos. 172nd and 174th overall (fifth round) and the No. 207th overall (sixth round).
